The Benefits of Wind Energy

21 July 2008

This section concerns those who do not have experience with wind turbines but are interested in knowing more about it as an energy resource.

Our bullet points below outline some key points about why wind energy is the fasting growing energy source and some benefits of it...

Ø      Wind is an abundant source of energy that will never run out, and furthermore it is a ‘green’ source of energy.

Ø      Wind energy is the world’s fastest growing energy source and in the U.K. where our company is based we are lucky enough to have approximately 40% of Europes wind resource, potentially enough to power the country 3 or 4 times over.

Ø      At the end of 2007, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 94.1 gigawatts. Although wind currently produces about 1% of world-wide electricity use, it accounts for approximately 19% of electricity production in Denmark, 9% in Spain and Portugal, and 6% in Germany and the Republic of Ireland (2007 data).

Ø      Globally, wind power generation increased more than fivefold between 2000 and 2007.

Ø      As the cost of energy becomes higher, more and more people are switching to renewable energy sources.

Ø      The intense research and development that has been completed in the wind energy sector now allows manufacturers to produce a cheaper turbine but with enhanced qualities & energy production.

Ø      Although the cost of wind varies between different countries, the trend everywhere is the same - wind energy is getting cheaper. The cost is coming down for various reasons. The turbines themselves are getting cheaper as technology improves and the components can be made more economically. The productivity of these newer designs is also better, so more electricity is produced from more cost-effective turbines. There is also a trend towards larger machines. This reduces infrastructure costs, as fewer turbines are needed for the same output

Ø      The cost of financing is also falling as lenders gain confidence in the technology. Wind power should become even more competitive as the cost of using conventional energy technologies rises.

To conclude, as the cost of living and energy increases wind energy is establishing itself as a valued source of energy. As the price of turbines decreases, due to the research and development optimizing output for size & manufacture costs, it is now feasible for homes and small business’s to have their own turbine as a source of energy.
